London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) was founded in 1960. The purpose of its establishment was to bring people engaged in maritime arbitration in London together to share experiences and jointly promote the development of London's maritime arbitration. Therefore, LMAA was claimed to be a “Similar Club” and has so far retained this tradition. It’s not a permanent body but a temporary one, something as the choice of British shipping community. LMAA’s history can be traced back to the Baltic Exchange some 300 years ago. At that time, a large number of outstanding maritime arbitrators appeared to provide legal services for disputes arising from the business of chartering, salvaging, collision, insurance, and damages. With the establishment of shipping broker crews, the scale of London maritime arbitrators have been growing under codes and norms. Temporary arbitration in the maritime sector has been further developed, and a great number of maritime contracts has prescribed to adopt London arbitration clauses. The thriving British shipping industry and the improving law system have promoted the maturity of maritime arbitration and have exerted an impact worldwide, which thus made London as the center of international maritime arbitration.
